hi i have a windows 7 profesional desktop pc and a windows vista home basic laptop whcih are both on the same network but i cannot access the files over the network however i did ping them and it was successful.Any ideas amd please dont say use cds or something like that becuase there is to much to transfer and plus i have a printer which i share over the network.

In the control panel, there should be a thing called network settings or network and sharing centre (or something to that effect - can't check now since I'm not on Windows). Anyway, there you should find an option to enable file sharing, it's usually turned off by default. Also, you'll need to share all the folders that you want other computers to have access to (just go to the properties of the folder and there should be tab called sharing to set it up), unless you are just happy using the "Public" folders (there's Public Documents, Public Downloads and so on... basically a load of folders that are accessible to everyone and shared by default IIRC).

I have the same problem and im using windows 7 Pro. All the other computers have XP Pro.
I can access the other computers just fine from 7. From XP Pro i cannot access my windows 7 pro.
I will be watching.

Yes that is the same with mine because i just tried connecting to a xp computer we have in the house from both the windows 7 pro and the vista basic computers and i managed to copy files from it so i think it is got to be something to do with the network and sharing in windows 7. PS before i got windows 7 i had xp pro on that pc and the xp pro and vista basic machine networked well.

i read up about this a while ago, and i think there is some sort of file you need to install on XP to allow sharing from Vista or 7, i honestly can't remeber what the file is called though

theres quite a lengthy guide on how to do Vista to XP, ive no doubt 7 to XP will be the same

Edit: Oops just saw that you're doing 7 to Vista, which is odd i would have thought itd work without any problems

yer that is what i thought with them being simular.I think it may be in the permissions or something. I dont know if this has anything to do with it but the folders which i cant access on the vista machine have a lock on them on the windows 7 pc ( i am new to windows 7 so i dont know how it all works yet).

hello i think i have managed to fix the problem.I did it by making new copies of the folders which i could not access over the network then in properties click on share and the select everyone and then it is done once i had done it on all of the ones i couldn't access which where all of the ones which had a padlock next to them .Once i did this the padlock disappeared.
