Networking XP & 2000

Hi All:

I am relatively new at this, but I am trying to set up a network between 2 computers, one with XP Professional, and one with WIN 2000. I have a Linksys hub (model EFAH05W) 5-port. I also have a DSL modem (creative's Broadexent). I have connected the 2 computers via CAT5 cable to the hub. Connected the hub to the modem via CAT5 cable. I also have a fax that is connected to the modem.

Is this configuration correct? If not, someone please advise me. I spoke with my DSL provider and they told me that I had to set up the IP for the hub?? How do I do that? I have my computer set up with the static IP address, subnet, gateway, promary & secondary DNS as the DSL provider gave me, but I can't get either computer to work using those (unless I connect my computer directly to the modem without anything else hooked up). I suspect I have to use something else for the IP, etc. Can someone please walk me through -- step-by-step because this is confusing to me -- on how to set this up? My computer is the XP, the other computer is the WIN 2000. Thanks anybody that is willing to help me!

Your setup is very close to working, you missed by one item. The hub which you have connected is not able to log in to your DSL account. I assume you have the on PC log in and then try to use that individual computer for internet access. You will have two options, while the first is the best/easiest. Instead of a hub you need a router. The router makes a connection to your ISP and holds it active, while still distributing it out to the rest of the computer attached to it. All you need is the router. The second choice would be hooking your main pc directly to the modem with Ethernet card 1 and then with ta second ethernet card go out from the same pc to a hub. The hub then goes to all other computers. The connections are bridged.

ok?

hi, i am actually having the same problem as the thread opener. I have two computers one is window xp, the other one is window2000. I connect a modem cable to the router, then I connect my windowXP computer 's ethernet cable to the router. The light of the router is on. But there is no connection. On the other hand, If i just connect my windowxp computer to the modem, it works right away. But if i connect the cable to the router, then there is no connection. So can you tell me how to set up the connection between my computers and the router and let two of my computers to hvae access to the internet? thank you

Also for some reasons, there is a "lock" on the screen of my "local area connection status". The lock is between "received" and "sent" under the activity category. Why is there a lock? does it affect my connection to the router?
