Networking with crossover cables

Im having a hard time getting this to work.

Basically, at work I have a desktop computer and a laptop. there is no ethernet line running into here so I get on the network with the laptop via wireless.

I want to connect the laptop and desktop together to share files and the connection.

I plug the crossover into both and they both recognise the cable as being there. The problem is I cant get them to see eachother to share files, nor share the connection.

Ive made them both the same workgroup, ive tried making them both the same ip's (IE 10.10.10.1 and 10.10.10.2) and ive tried entering the gateway of the laptop as the gateway in the desktop, and nothing is working.

the desktop is win2k, and the laptop is winxp.

any ideas?

Man it's been too long since my Cisco class :P

OK, I don't think this would be a problem, but more common IP address's would be 192.168.1.1 through 255 or 10.0.1.1 through 255. Subnet should be 255.255.255.0. Gateway is the computer that has the net connection.

I've never really set 2 computer up with just a single cable, so I'm not sure if other protocols are needed. I know something is needed for sharing the internet(other than basic TCP/IP I mean...)

Have u tried setting them up using winxp's network setup wizard? this should do all the work for you and should get the computers 'seeing' each other, or maybe it is the firewall on the computers blocking the connections, hope this helps :)

can your laptop ping the desktop? If so, do you have file & print sharing installed in you lan connection properties? If not, you can ping your own address correct?
