Networking with 2 Windows XP PCs - how?

Hi guys,

I've been trying to set up a very simple connection between my laptop and my desktop PC but I just can't get it to work. Here are the details - I'd MUCH aprecciate some pro advice coz I'm not very good with networking :o

I've got a Desktop PC with WIFI network card and a Laptop also WIFI enabled. Both computers are currently connected to the Wireless Modem/Router.

Now, because I need to synchronise both of them regulary and move large amounts of data, I want to setup a direct ethernet cable connection between both of them - just to transfer data (not to connect to the internet trhough one of them)

What do I need to do to be able to establish a network?

I connected them with a crossover cable which is definitely working.

Someone told me that I have to give them static IPs which I have done (192.168.5.30 and 192.168.5.31). I figured out that if I use 192.168.0.x my WLAN internet connection doesn't work no more.

I have enabled file sharing on both PCs (Desktop: Win XP Pro - Laptop: Win XP home)

I tried to ping them: no response. I'm able to see the other computer via the WLan - going thru the router, but this is simply too slow.

How can I establish the direct cable connection using my cross over cable??

THANKS everyone who can help!

Kai

no. i tried this as well. but as i said i can't even ping them. accessing them via the method you suggested can't work then either...

depends how you tried pinging them... If they are getting an ip address as you said, then they should be able to get pinged... Is the local firewall on each pc? that may be it.

hi! thanks!

there is only the windows firewall active, but i've also tried with that one disabled....

I don't know what the problem could be. It definitely doesn't look like a hardware problem. is there another way I can find out if those 2 pcs can "see each other"?

Cheers,
kai
