networking questions from a old newbie

Where has this forum been all my life? :)
I've never tried to network two computers before. But as I am considering scrapping my old Compaq and finally getting a new comp I wanted to ask a couple of basic (and prob dumb) questions.
I wanted to practice networking with a Gateway my bro in law gave me but it doesn't have a network connection on it (bought an ethernet cable for nought). Can one network two computers through usb connections?
And... my Compaq runs on Windows 98 SE. When I get a new computer which will obviously use a more updated version, can I network the two to make transfering my files easier or is that impossible?

Yes it is all possible. The network cards are cheap, (20$)... The Usb adaptors loose connectivity, and has not been perfected yet... Try to stay away from it is possible.

The networking between the win98 and anew pc WINXp/Vista should be no problem at all.

It's also possible to directly connect two (but no more) PC's using a 'Crossover' cable (looks like network cable but slightly different wiring) which plugs directly into the network sockets without the need for a network hub. I used this to connect a 98se and an xp computer, then used the 'files and settings wizard' available in xp to automatically move all my files, emails, bookmarks, connection settings etc from the old to a new pc.
