ok, so i have a crossover cable, i have a hub and i have tried linking my 2 laptops so that both can be on the net at the same time, BUT...i cant get the whole setup process. I plugged the crossover cable into both computers, (I have also tried setting up the hub) but now what do i do? i have been told that i need to configure one as the "master" that will dial into the net and the other as the one that connects through it.But i have never been given step by step instructions.I am running Win XP on both. Can someoe help please?

you may need a straight-through/standard network cable for it to work with your hub.

Anyhow..
What method are you using to connect to the internet dial-up/adsl/cable?
Do you have a modem/router?
How is the modem or router connected to your Laptop USB/Firewire/Serial/Cat5(network cable)?

Not sure exactly what your problem is because you weren't very clear in the post. What I think you're trying to do could be simplified by purchasing a cable/dsl router from local best buy circuit city. You can plug that directly into your network connection then both computers can access the internet. If you use this method you will need straight through cables. Otherwise, this other method you're trying to set up could be complicated for a person without networking experience.

I have straight through cables for my hub, but i also have a crossover cable to direct link, all i want to do is configure both computers so that they recognise each other and i can see them on both computers.I am using dial up.I have an internal modem in both laptops. :)

I have tried setting them up before, but the instructions i was given were confusing. As i have had no network experience i need a step by step intruction list from someone :o

I have plugged my hub in, to both computers, but what do i need to do next to get it sharing stuff?

Thanks

just a lil note to say thanks for everyones help.I got my network up and running now.And have 5 puters on it.
