Hello could anyone link me somewhere that gives me a step to step guide on how to network two computers running XP and using a cable that looks like this.

So if anyone can write or knows of a guide that shows me how to do it I would be very gratefull, as I tried before and it didn't work. Note I want to share internet connection. And the main cable for net will be in my desktop. Reason I wont be using a router is cos my dad is weird and seems scared of them and wont change.

Thanks for any help

Jon

You will need a second network card in the computer which will be sharing the internet. Plug one cord form the "internet" into computer #1, then run a cord from computer #1 (network card #2) into computer #2. Then do the internet connection wizard on the computer #1... Then #2.

it is call ICS "internet connection sharing"

Erm you have confused me already. Whats this about 2nd network cards?? im using a broadband modem. And last time i tried Internet connection wazard thing I got no where.

If you don't have a second NIC (network interface card) you should get a broadband router. That will share your internet with usually upto 4 computers

The thing is my dad refuses to use a broadband router lol. He is old and weird so he gets scared of them for some reason.

So well how would I check if I have one of these card thingies? I have the full vertion of everest ultimate edition 2006 is there somewhere on there I can look?

I know I have a wireless network card inbuilt into my PC and so does my sister so all we need is the base unit thingy for the router but my dad gets scared of radio signals and shit the stupid bloke. (there is no changing hismind btw).

there are routers that are only hard wired. Their quite cheap even. You don't have to use a wireless router and your father doesn't have to worry about the aliens

He's already told us that he cant use a router, and by looking at the picture it looks like both computers have a wireless and wired network card.

If you plug the yellow cable into both computers, you would need to setup an IP, Subnet, DNS, and a Gateway. It sounds tricky but it really isnt, but if you did get a wired or wireless router, all you need to do is pretty much hook it up and your all set.

O righty thanks for the help. I dont suppose any of you have a step to step guide on what I have to do do you? To do all thos crazy things you said.

Those basicaly

1. I assume your broadband router is connected via USB, or you have a spare network port on your PC for your network.

2. Make sure you are using CROSSOVER cable, not patch cable. Unfortunately, you can get both in yellow.

3. Once you've made sure you're using the right cable, what happens when you plug everything in? Do you have no connection at all, or is it just the Internet sharing that isn't working?

4. I assume both PCs are using WindowsXP?

If you set up network ,you can install some program like FreeProxy on computer that is connected directly to the internet.
On other computer set up in internet explorer (or some else)
Tools->internet options->connections->lan settings->proxy server
write ip address of computer #1 and default port is 8080

Ok well I got this now after I plugged in the cables. It says limited or no connectivity. So I dont know how to share the connection I clicked share connection but that hasnt worked. Also I clicked something to do with auto do me an ip adress but that didnt work.

Any help?

I wrote you!
Or you can give them ip addresses 192.168.0.x if you want to windows share connections.
IP ADDRESSES MUST BE 192.168.0.X

Erm I cant check now because my sister has gone to bed. But I will get that programme you spoke about. Thanks :).and erm if that doesnt work I will change the IP addresse to what you said.
