I currently have 2 computers setup and was thinking about using one for file storage. He's what I was thinking but i have no idea how to do it or if its even possible.

Both systems have windows xp pro. I was hoping to use the slower one as the file server but I wanted to be sure that I can lock it down so that the drive cant be accessed without my password??

Im still very unsure about the whole sever/network subject so any advice would be appreciated.

Also, does it matter what colour the cable is that connects to the two LAN cards? I somehow have red, grey and blue cables thats fit...

Are you connected to a router with both PC's?

Whats the reason you want a file server? For speed, or to have all files in a common place?

Server OS

It is important to think about the file permissions when trying to make a file server secure. When you share a directory you can set the permissions. You can allow users to access that share. But on the workstation that use name must exsist on the workstation machine. Common usernames on each machine as you don't have a domain controller to authorize users. You would have to change the OS on the file server to windows 2000 server or windows 2003 server in order to make a domain controller.

I wanted a file server so that I could store all my secure files in one place. Im starting to think now that it might be easier to grab a spare hard drive i have lying around and get a HD external box for it. At least that way I could just unplug the HD and lock it up.

But then i'll have to fiqure out what to do with my old P3!!!!!:D

cant you just put the files on one pc and share them so they are accessable on the other, then put on a password to secure the files

The problem is putting a password so someone on either pc cant access them... not just the networked pc.

i mean put a password on the shared files/folders to stop people accessing them. You can do this on Win98 so why not on xp pro?

yes you can put it for people trying to access the shared file... I think he means if someone locally or on the same pc wants access it will ask for a pw...

Only reason i would worry about 99.9% of people accessing a shared drive would be an unsecured wireless network.
