i've got 2 pcs one downstair and the other is upstair. They both connected to the broadband internet via a d link router. For the past few weeks they've been working fine but for some reason last week the one upstair is not able to access to the internet although the status suggested it is online. The one downstair is still working fine but it gives me the weird ip addresses.

I looked at the ipconfig for the one upstair and there were no ip addresses for default gateway and dns.......

Can anyone help ??

thanks

are they wireless?
are they connected?
is the upstairs pc picking up an ip addy from dbhp, or are you assigning it yourself?
is the dchp sever running on the router?

sorry guys.....they are cable networking and they are all connected but the pc upstair is picking up an ip add from dhcp. there is no server running on router.

when you are in a CMD prompt type ipconfig /renew and see what happens, if it says "there is no adapter currently in a state permissable for this actions" then try the following. Go into Network onnections and right click the Local Area Conenction, go into properties and on the GENERAL tab, scroll down in the box and make sure that TCP/IP box is checked/enabled. After you do that go and do ipconfig /renew again and see what happens then.

If all of that fails then remove the networking device from device manager and reboot, let windows install the device again and start from scratch, make a new connection etc....

If that fails try using a different network card/port or different cables. Final thought = reset your router.

try going into device manager on both computers, and uninstalling all netowrk adapters. then one of the icons up top is scan for hardware changes. it will pick up all adapters and prompt you to run network wizard (if it doesnt, run it manually from the network connections folder). this routine has fixed many network connection problems on my netowkr, and other peoples network.
