Networking computers

This is something I always have problems we have. I have just reformatted my PC and I want to network it so it is connected up to all the other computers. For some reason, I always find it difficult to do. I have tried the network wizard but that made no difference at all. I have made sure that my documents can be shared. I just can't understand why I can't get this PC on the network

First off what are you doing in the wizzard what options are you selecting? Second do you have firewalls on they will always stop this from happening if you have them on and have not configured them.

First of all, there is no networking wizard on the PC that I have just reformatted. I just go to add a network place and get as far as "what is the address of this network place" if I browse, there are no computers listed so I can't select one. If I run a network wizard on the other computer, I get as far as almost done, and I always choose the option now I don't want to make a disk. Nothing happens when I finish

Simple neworking

What the network wizard does for you is a few very simple things.

If you have two or more computers you want to network, the first step is to make sure both have an IP Address which is in the same range. For example one could be 192.168.0.11 and the other could be 192.168.0.12 - these computers are on the same range. So first step START -> RUN -> CMD and type in 'ipconfig' without the quotes. You should see IP Addresses similar to described above.

Once you have verified that, make sure both computers are in the same workgroup or domain: RIGHT-CLICK My Computer -> Choose PROPERTIES -> Select The COMPUTER NAME tab -> make sure where WORKGROUP is listed, all computers have the same (IE MSHOME or WORKGROUP or HOMEGROUP or just about any damn thing you want).

If they aren't identical make them so by choosing the CHANGE button and entering the relevant workgroup name under where it says "MEMBER OF".

If you do change the workgroup you'll have to reboot. Once done, you need to share resources on the network. To share folders, right-click on a folder and choose "Sharing and Security". You should see a section for "Network Sharing and Security". It may not be enabled by default, but there is a link that says "If you understand the risks etc etc etc" - click that link, you will be prompted (choose JUST ENABLE FILE SHARING) and sharing will be enabled.

At this point, you get tickboxes which ask "share this folder on the network" - tick that and enter a name for the share (such as "DOWNLOADS"). You also have the option "Allow network users to change my files" - you can tick that if you want to be able to add files to the share, delete files and modify files from other computers.

There are also more advanced sharing options for specific users etc, but I'll leave you to research that. If you follow all that you should be able to see shares on the network. You can share printers, cd drives etc etc as well.

Okay, I think I have done everything. I checked the IP address on both computers. This one ends in 02, the other 04. I have right clicked my documents on the other computer and made sure that the sharing box is ticked. Both computers have the same workgroup name but it still won't work.

Without starting a new thread, I have another problem with the other computer, the one I have just reformatted. Today, when i try to either restart, or shut down the computer, a box comes up with "in:C DebugLoglog" in it. When you click okay, the computer will not shut down. You have to either do shut down all restart about seven or eight times and then all the icons and taskbar disappear and you have to shut the computer down by holding in the button on the front of the computer. Wonder if it's got anything to do with Norton Internet security?

Check Norton. You probably need to configure the firewall settings. Go to Personal Firewall and click "Configure". Go to the Advanced tab and click "General".
This will bring you to a list of firewall rules. Scroll down until you see the one entitled "Block Windows File Sharing". By default, this rule is 'Blocked'.
Click on it and then the "Modify". In the Action tab, select "Permit". In the Connections tab, select "Connections to and from other computers".
