network with proxy??

Hey,

this may be a simple question so i am sorry if it has been asked before.

I have two pc in my house. only one is connected to broadband with a USB modem. I have a router which i would like to use to connect the two.

My question is. Is is possible to plug in the USB modem into one computer (leave it running like a proxy) connect that pc to the router (from the LAN card to the WAN port on the router)

I would then like to connect another PC to the router and have the 2nd pc connect to the internet from using the first.

Is this possible?

What areas do i need to think about?

My understading is that i set the router up:-

Ip address:- ip for 1st computer
subnet:- subnet for 1st
gateway:- ip of 1st

then on the second computer, change the internet options to dial to a proxy and give it the ip of the first.

Am i anywhere near?

Thanks

Alex Lundy

No, you can't connect a computer to a router like that. If you're going to use a proxy, simply use the "switch/hub" ports on the router. Set up some proxy server on the comp with the modem. Go to your other computer, and in your online programs(yes, you must do this for all of them) set up a proxy server, directing it to the 'server'

well i would rather not use a proxy, but i was wanting to chare the connection from once pc to another.

This wouldnt be a problem if the modem wasnt USB, but guess what!.

Would you be able to suggest the best option for a simple network?

I have 2 pcs. - both running win 2000
one usb modem
one router
lots of cable.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Alex

Connect the 2 computers using the switch portion of the router(not the WAN port), install the modem on one computer, then try and find some other internet sharing software. I'm sorry I can't be of much more help but I really havn't dealt with such modems or setups. Personally I dispise most USB devices!

I just did a quick search and found this... Perhaps it'll be of some assistance.
