network questions

Hi,
i have a desktop and one notebook. there are two NICs in the desktop. one connects to my ADSL modem and one connects to notebook. all use windows XP and work good until yesterday -- i reinstalled notebook with XP agian. The strange thing is that any time if i access the other computer through this network (no matter from desktop to notebook or from notebook to desktop, such as access the other one's share directory), the desktop will freeze but notebook is ok. I guess there must be something with the software, such as procotol, but I don't know where it is. Can anybody help me? thanks.

Do you have the notebook and desktop directly connected to one another? If so, how is this being done without a switch or a hub? As far as the freezing issue is concerned, did you install new drivers for one of the NICs yesterday? If so, try rolling back the driver on that network card and see if that fixes it. That's the only thing I can think of right now..., but I'll keep chewing on it.

Hi,
thanks for your suggestion. Well, I haven't try what you said. What i did is connect the desktop and notebook directly and connect desktop to ADSL with the other NICs. both drivers are the same as before.

The very strange thing is that i can ping each other fine, but if i want to access other one, such as shared directory, then desktop will freeze, notebook is ok. I don't know why. If there is any problem with any of two NICs, the ping should fail. but it is ok. That is the reason why i guess there maybe some procotol wrong with my computers. But i don't know what it is.
