Please can you help:

Although I have managed to set up my computer system ok I have just tried to set up a system for somebody with no joy. 1 system is brand new, 1 system is a laptop and 1 system is an older computer. I have gone The 2 systems are plugged into the Wireless hub direct with Ethernet cable and the Laptop is wireless. I have gone through the Network set up in XP and everything appersa to be ok but here is my problem:

The Old computer can see the Laptop, The laptop can see the Old computer and the new computer, but will not access the new computer and the new computer doesn't see any of the others.

This is basically the exact same set up as I used but mine worked. Could this be due to the computer having a newer version of XP on it? Could it be due to the new Norton he has put on all the systems or is it something so simple that I have missed?

If you can help it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mart :-)

Some time I need to use XP's network wizard crap to see what it actually does. But my guess is it simply makes things worse :P

If you have a firewall, disable it for not. When you say the computer can see another, you're looking in My Network Places, correct? Try going to start > run > and type in the computer name. Say the laptop is called "laptop", type in \\laptop. Or if you know the IP assigned to the computers, try typing in that(\\192.168.10.2 or whatever)

Also, for got measure, go to command(Start > Run > CMD) and type ping and the IP address(no slashes this time) Something like ping 192.168.10.2

I presume you know all about Ip address's and work groups and misc stuff. make sure that the Ip's all follow the general same address (eg - 192.168.1.? where the question mark should be a different number on each system) and make sure that the work group is the same...i just leave it as WORKGROUP.

And in the intests of saving time share the C drive on all the computers so when you are testing you can just type \\COMPUTERNAME\C which is nearly instant access as opposed to \\COMPUTERNAME which takes some time.

I had this same problem with my computer recently. My laptop would see all the computers but it wouldn't talk to them. Tried putting a password on and everything. Nothing would work. Finally when i reformatted the laptop with vista sure enough it came right up and worked. Sounds to me like the nic is messed up on the computer.
