Network problems with host computer

Hi we have a network set up through a Lan and we are using ICS, his as a host and we have file and printer sharing set up on both computer, we are sharing through a dsl net and using a d-link router.

Some reason the host computer cannot gain access to my computer nor see my shared files in his network anymore, he always does. I usualy have a problem setting up things so i can see what he has on the shared network.

At this point i can access his files, but he cant get into mine, I have used registry cleaners recently and had to do a restore and it backed up/renamed or moved a bunch of files, could not track the files that were all changed.

I have changed my computer name and user name on my cpu and reset up the network and i changed his computer name and re set up netowrk, we both have the same workgroup name, but he still cannot connect to me nor see any folders bein shared.

Here are the errors he gets.

Why are you using ICS while using a router? The router splits the internet connection, and provides a network for a share interface...

? Not no expert on routers, just were told we needid one if we wanted to share the net through dsl and 2 computers, wev always had the host computer have ics set up and then the guest to share off it, net works fine.

Whats the difference if we set up the router to share the net and or files?

Splitting might cause more lag then how ics works? I dont think that has to do with the problem about using the router vr ics, but i do wish for a better networking program. Just need to figgure out why he cant get into me anymore.

Thats how we set it up so i the guest could get internet access, w.o setting up ics i could not gain access, dont know any other work arrounds then.

well if you DO have a router, plug them both into it and you automatically have a working network, and internet access to both. (you may be describing a modem). Doesnt it bother you that you need to have pc1 turned on to make pc2 work?

We are connected to the router, and i dont need the host computer on inorder to get internet access, but we need to set up ICS inorder for me to get internet access. Still having problms with him getting into my cpu

Ok let me explain something... Ics is used when you have NO ROUTER. ICS allows 1 internet connection, and 2 computers to work. With ICS you plug in PC1 to the modem, and PC2 into PC1. Therefor PC1 would require 2 ethernet cords. If you dont have this setup, then your not talking about ICS. If your doing something with ICS inorder to get the internet working, you have something REALLY screwed up.

If thats the case then it dont matter because its not running like ICS wouldboth computers connect to the router and the router is connected to the dsl modem ect, we reset the router setting, will see if the network will work , later

If your connected straight to the router, then this is easy. You just need to make sure both computers are in the same network, both has sharing enabled. If it still dont work run the network wizard.

Since this is not directed to my original problem, i would like to figgure it out, He still cant connect into my cpu to access my shared folders, but i can get into him, any reasons why?? Internet is not the situation here. Im running out of ideas.. we have also reset the router but still never changed anything for him getting into my files.

wow thats crazy your thinkng to hard about your problem set your computer to all of its networking defaults or use your xp disk to repair your windows settings then run the network wizard from your control panel on both computers if you have dsl select set up network manually then select use internet connetion without a pass word and is always on the rest is fairly simple and if you are both running xp you will not need to run a disk just skip that part and finish the install also you might be confusing your self bysaying cpu that stands for central processing unit you cant acsess that from anothe rcomputer but you can acsess the drive and the files
