Hi! I have a laptop and a desktop. They are connected by a Ethernet Crossover cable. The internet is connected to the laptop through the USB port. (NTL BB from modem)

The laptop can access the desktops shared folder but the desktop cannot access the laptops.
Also, the desktop cannot access the internet but the laptop can.
they are both running Windows XP Pro. Both are turned on aswell.

Can anyone help?

Jimbob :D

By the way, I dont want to buy a router!

no router huh? You can buy a hub... :)

If you bought a hub you would have to buy a new modem because it needs to have a ethernet connection not a usb to connect to the hub, unless you can get hubs with usb connection

a hub doesnt split the net connection, it just links computers together.

You could still connect a modem to it though, coudn't you and use to connect to the internet ?

It was a statement meaning a crossover cable doesnt always work as best as other connection like a hub/router... If you dont want a router get a hub.

If you want to know how a hub would work...

Wan connection--->(USB)Desktop(Ethernet Card w/ICS)--->(IN)HUB(OUT)--->Laptop

no crossover required... therefore no problems

I thought you meant using a hub as a sort of router, with the modem connected to it. Not going through the desktop pc

Hi, I still havent got it working :(

Can someone point me in the direction to a step-by step guide or give me a few steps to setting it up correctly?

Thanks,

Jimbob
