i have an okidata c6100 color laser jet printer. its hooked up to my router so all my computers can use it. i got a new computer in my house and windows cant find it on the network. i usually use the cd but i left it at a friends house. so is there anyway i could find it. microsoft doesnt help they tell me to go to start->search->printer, computer, and people but my computer on has computer and people. no printer.

Actually if your computer works with the printer by it plug the printer into that computer instead of the router and you can access it just as easily if not easier that way. I have 5 computers in my house and the printer is plugged into my main pc and they all print through the network that way

Network printers are different (I have two, a commercial HP color laser and a 3 tray commercial Lexmark laser). They don't use USB cables. They connect with CAT5 cables and they communicate with the TCP/IP protocol. You can't just connect them directly to a computer or they won't work over the network.

I've done that before, but we have one desktop right now and the rest are laptops with the wireless network. The desktop is one of mine and it is not always on and when it's off you cant use it. I actually got it to work, but now i switched from DSL to Cable and had to reset everything, now I cant get it to work on any computer. I'll just have to keep trying and figure it out. Thanks u guys

That's actually not completely always the case. A lot of network capable printers can use CAT5, parallel or USB.

Do you have the drivers installed for the printer? If not, download them and see if the compy can see the printer then...

goto
printers and faxes
add new printer
local - uncheck PNP
create new port
Standerd TCP-IP port
type in IP address of printer - This should be a static ip, not DHCP (change it inside printer if it is not)
Choose your print driver - should be on there if it was installed before .. if not you will need to download driver off web

and your done

Good for you, IP printers rock!
