I have an issue,
I am on a router and wish to connect to a shared folder on my computer from school and also use the remote destop client to access my computer.
I cannot just use my IP address to connect because there are 2 other computers on my network that have the same IP as me.

any help would be apretiated =)

An IP address is a way each computer can be distinguished on the network, so obviously no two computers should have the same IP address... I don't understand why you'd have a problem as the router should automatically assign IP addresses to each computer(192.168.1.2, or something similar to that)

no they have the same IP mabey im missing something but I go to find my ip on this site http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and they both turn up the same ip 68.235.xxx.xxx.

Do routers have their own IP? Mabey it is detecting the routers ip and not the computers physical IP.

I ran ipconfig and i recived 192.168.x.xxx

I set up a shortcut on a computer on my network linking to:
"\\192.168.x.xxx\Storage (C)" the shortcut works on the computer on my network. Will it work on computers not on my network?

well that sounds like a whole new adventure, at least im getting closer.
Im on a D-link router. I will look for some doc on line but post any helpfull info in the meantime.

Thanks for the help so far

No, they don't share the same IP address, at least not local. Yes, you do have the same WAN IP address on all computers, but the assigned IP to each computer must be different.

Are you using remote desktop over your network or over the internet? If you just want to do it within your network, simply using the 192.168 address is fine. Otherwise you do need to open ports and what not.

no i can connect fine from the network computers that part is easy, I want to connect from a computer that is not on my network.

If i open a port what should the neww shortcut address look like?

"\\192.168.x.xxx :8080\Storage (C)" Kinda like that?

To go outside your network, you'll need the client software installed and then you simply need to type in your WAN(not LAN/192.168 address) address. You also might need to specify your port number if you use a non-standard one.
