net send

is Thomas the name of the computer? if it not replace Thomas with the name of the computer. And also are you networked to the computer that you are tryihg to send that message to?

Thats where your problem is, this is the syntax you have to use:

net send {name | * | /domain[:name] | /users} message

If thomas is the name of the computer then he is doing it right.

Problems could be..

-Messenger service is disabled on either computer.
-thomas computer is not on.
-not connected locally on the same network.
 
I should also point out that by default, any computer with Windows XP Service Pack 2 disables net send. So you can try and send messages, however the computers wont be able to see the message unless they allow it to.

you have to enable the messenger service, this can be found in CONTROL PANEL - ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS - SERVICES - scroll down to MESSENGER and click START SERVICE.
