Just needing a little help :o ...

I'm wanting to network my main PC which is running ME and mt laptop which is running XPHome.

The laptop is wireless and is sharing the internet from the router, my PC is connected to BT's Voyager 2100 router via a CAT5 cable.

How do I netowrk them so I can share the printer connected on the PC and share the files between the PC and the laptop.

I've googled but I couldn't find anything 'idiot proof' I kinda just need it explained step-by-step on what I need to do on both the PC and the laptop.

If it's going to be too much, I apologise :( I'm just a little confused atm...

Cheers big ears... :)

Thanx Praetor, I've been on that site but I'm still left confused on how I actually network the PC and laptop, what settings I need to change, what boxes I need to go in. I really need a step-by-step guide. Sorry.

But thanx anyway.

Well when I had problems viewing other computers on networks, with different OS i would install the netbeui internet protocol. Winxp will not let you install it, but WinME will let you. What you have to do is:

Right click my network neighborhood go properties
Right click on your high speend icon orl lan connection, go properties
Toward the middle there is a button says install, click it
It will give you three options, select protocols
Look under the microsoft networking protocols, and select netbeui...
Install it and run..

When both your computers are on the netowrk (both turned on and signed in) go to an internet browser and type in \\"computer name"

If you dont know your computer name right click on my computer and clickproperties, the computer name chould be listed there. If you cant find the name for some reason, you can also do it by local IP. You can get that from the router, OR you can go to the start menu, run and type in cmd... When thats open type in "ipconfig". Your local ip will be listed there. It usually starts with a 169 or a 192 etc.

If you want to browse a computers shared files by IP type it like this \\192.168.2.1 (with your ip). This should allow you to view ANY computer on the network which is behind the same router.

If you have a router, everything should be basically automatic. netbeui is not needed anymore, TCP/IP does fine alone.

If you want to connect an older computer to a newer one, find what name you're logged in as on the old computer, go to computer management on the newer one(right click my computer/manage) and add the username to the list. That SHOULD allow you access...

On 95-ME, I think you have to enable file and print shareing separately, but 2000 and XP should be auto.

Feel free to IM me if you have more specific questions, or if I overlooked something ^^;

I have always found netbeui worked fine with ME/98 networking. It was an easy fix. Yes I agree it is not needed for WinXp to WinXp but when your networking across multiple platforms, it helps.

Thanx for you help trizoy & the other one, I don't know what netbeui is but I'l give what you've out up there ^^^ a go.

Thanx again, you're help is much appreciated

No prob...

You can install netbeui, I beleive you could even find it for XP... I've just never needed it personally. I used to have a network going with 98, 2000, and XP and none of the had netbeui installed, no problems what so ever...
