Okay, so i have a wireless router at home, my laptop connects wirelessly, and my other PC is wired to the switch. I need to remote control (i.e. use XP from afar) on my PC, and just access my files on the laptop. I wanna be able to remote control my PC from anywhere, and be able to use sound, drag 'n' drop, transfer files, and of course, strong encryption. For the laptop, i also need ALL the above, plus a secure connection, but minus the remote control. Some help would be great.

if you have windows pro+ you can use the built in remote desktop note windows pro+ must be on the computer you want to connect to if you want to go that way.

Except, for some reason, remote desktop does NOT work when i LEAVE my house....What about the laptop, how would i access the files on it from afar?

If you just need it for basic usage, you could try logmein and see if that suits your needs. The free version doesn't have sound though but you can get a trial of "pro" to see if it will work for you.

It will show you your desktop (full screen in a web browser) so you can do almost anything you would normally use your PC for. However, it is streaming images of your desktop across the internet so it will be limited by your connection speed butyou can access it from any internet connection with most browsers. It does take a second to load so things are fairly jittery (you wouldnt be able to watch videos) but for basic tasks, moving files, basic document editing, etc, it would be fine.

We use it in the IT department where I intern. It allows us to access PCs in the office (to start file transfers, check email, use ghost, etc.) from any PC in the school (or even from home for that matter).

What do you mean it doesnt work when you leave your house? Just leave your computer on can even put a screen saver on it so no one can log onto it. What os does the computer have that you want to connect to?

i'm using the Teamviwer as a remote desktop application. its free to use for pirvate users.. you dont even need to install it on your computer or your partners computer, just run the application on both sides and connect - even through tight firewalls.
