Hi everyone. I am wanting to connect a wireless router to an existing router in my apartment and i'm not exactly sure how to do it. Now before you start asking why I don't just connect the wireless router in place of the existing router, here is my situation. I want to place the wireless router on the middle level of our 3 level apartment. Better signal on the top floor and it's right in the middle. Do i need to connect it straight to my computer to configure it or do i plug it onto the router first and configure it that way. Any help would be great. Thanks guys.

what you want to accomplish is possible but you need firmware that supports wireless bridging with WDS support, or an AP that supports power over ethernet.

Or if you have power at your APs location you must run a cat 5 cable to it, put it in ospf mode, turn dhcp server off, and mirror the dns, dhcp, and gateway settings of the main router.

To my knowledge no router supports this out of the box and requires loading third party firmware on the router. I have done this before personally so I know it works with ddwrt firmware

Well i have CAT 5 and power at my AP's location. So i just need to find the firmware upgrade to allow this to happen. Maybe i would just be better off replacing the existing router with the wireless one. And if a have too much signal loss then i can look into moving the wireless upstairs. I just thought it would be easier to do. Copy the dhcp, dns and gateway settings over and go with it. Thanks for the info.

Well it worked connecting the wireless router to my main router in the basement. I just put the wireless router within the IP addresses the main router recognized. Worked like a charm. No firmware update or any problems. Thanks anyway guys.
