Need help on this Compact PC

Hi guys;how're you all.Ok i need some help i found this PC Compact Presario AMD Athlon (tm) XP 1700+ 6000 with 40g hard drive,1.46G,256MB of Ram with option of one more 256Mb slot,windows service Pack2, i found this on the dampster brought it home since i'm electronic student i checked it out and the only thing that was bad was the Fan in the power supply, i replaced it and started it and shows the COMPACT logo and stops and shows this on the screen, V02.00 <F10=Setup> if i press F10 it goes black and stays there when i turn on and off a couple time on the front switch it starts,although is very slow i have to delete a lot of stuff but i'm afraid to delete some that i shouldn't. also i don't have the recovery disk,where can i get it for free? any help would be apreciated.

What kind of help is that, you seem not red my post,i had fixed the power supply,it's running ok i think with solfware problem that i mentioned, by the way it was not inside the trush can,it was on the side of the street,
 
There probably is a Hardware problem or something probably why they threw it out(People these days) How do you know that the PSU was the only problem, if it's not running right then there is obviously something else wrong.

You probably right but i won't know till i do a recovery when i can get hold of windows xp CD,since i don't have any other way.

Gooberman please can you tell me how it goes,i some times can run the compuer like i'm doing now, this post is from this pc, it boots after a few times pressing power switch on and off repeatly a few times same goes to enter the Bios setup ,i could enter the bios to setup time and date, and there is 2 functions that says

(Save to Diskette)

to create a Save/restore diskette)

Please insert a Writable Diskette into Drive A: than press F-10,

i have some diskettes and insert it to save and it says it's bad, this diskettes are 1.4Mb/2HD 3.5, they have been used,i just deleted their content, do i have to format them? where is the formating function in this computer? THanks in advance.
 
Why not just try to put a linux distro on it to make sure the hard drive is even good. Sounds like it could be bad ram or mobo.
