Need help finding a good computer

Achtung: QUESTION! Any help is much appreciated; so, I don't have the information necessary to know the difference between a quality computer and a junk computer... except, I've been told that DELL hardware is junky (breaks easy?).

Anyway, what I'm mainly looking for is a quality desktop or laptop computer. I've heard Acer's are good... But what is "quality" in a computer? There's probably several computers that are "quality" depending on what they're used for, and that even within the precise category of use there may be several good ones to choose from?

- My criteria is this: I'm willing to spend somethin' like $500 on a Windows/Intel computer which will mostly be used heavily for internet, as best as possible avoiding sites (like myspace or whatever) that could give viruses (should I go with Safari, Firefox, or another?). But I'd also use Microsoft Word often.
- It would be cool if the hardware were easily fixable for relatively cheap prices whenever something breaks down, excluding the possibility of finding free used parts and re-assembling it myself. A desktop is always easier to fix than laptop, right? (Btw I'm in Seattle; does anyone know where I could find free parts? And is this recommendable, or even preferable than paying to fix a broken computer? Seems that Macs would be pricey to have fixed by a store or even by doing it yourself. Am I wrong?)
- I'd want something that will last for quite a long time. (A nice, guaranteed warranty is a plus, but I don't know that this is available for computers like it is for Dr. Martin boot classics.)

That's about it. I wrote this at 2am and was very tired, so sorry if anything doesn't make sense.

Are you confident with building a PC or would you rather it were pre-assembled? Sounds like to me in your post you'd tather buy an OEM machine.

Regarding the web browsers, IMO a web browser is only as safe as the person who is using it. I've used both Safari and Firefox (using Firefox right now actually) and both are good, but I'd give an edge to Firefox.

Make sure you install the add on "Web of Trust" if you want to reduce the number of malicious sites you accidentally visit (it's free and defnitely works with Firefox and Google Chrome, not sure about Safari though) and also be sure to get some good anti-virus software (I and many other users here recommend Avast Free Anti-Virus).

Hmmm... in my experience it's been the other way round, with Dells being the better built. Certainly Acer's laptops can be a bit iffy in build quality, not sure about their desktops. Basically so long as you don't spend 24 hours kicking the PC or do anything stupid to it it should be OK. Certainly some of Dell's older machines (pre 2006) weren't that great, but in the past copule of years they have improved. Got a Dell system sitting downstairs for a customer and it seems solid enough.

If that's the case I would consider building your own machine rather than buying a pre-assembled one, because if you build it you have control over what goes into that system. For $500 and what you want to do (browsing and Microsoft Word), you could build a good PC, you may not even need to spend $500, you might have some change... which would be nice. But only build if you're comfortable doing it.

Usually they are, but it depends on what laptop it is. Some are easier to take apart than others. Usually the reason why people go for desktops over laptops is because desktops are easier to upgrade than laptops.
