Need a sound system.

I used to hook up car speakers and amps to my computer back in the day, so I never really messed with "computer speakers" until one day I decided to sell all my car audio, well most of it, so I had to buy some cheap Creative Inspire T3100 2.1 system which when I bought it sounded nice. And it still does, but its showing its age as this amplifier cant really put out any power anymore for bass. Not that it had alot to begin with...

Now, I got a nearly complete Klipsch Promedia 5.1 computer system which was really nice considering its retail.... but it was missing the control part and the center speaker, making it pretty much useless since I could not use the amp or hook it up to my computer without the control. So I took the speakers and am using them for my living room surround for now and the subwoofers are done for, the surround on them has all come apart.

Now that I have been building my new room, I need a sound system to go in it.... and a powerful one at that since its a good size room. Im also going to eventually get a sound card.

So Im trying to decide between Klipsch or Logitech? Years ago I was told that Logitech had some of the most powerful computer subwoofers. So I was looking at the Z906. But I read some reviews saying that it didnt sound very good... and someone had said the Klipsch Promedias sounded better..

So should I get another set of Promedia speakers? I want something with plenty of power but will also sound crystal at top volume. I also dont wanna spend anymore than $500.

For me, I prefer to buy a cheap sound cable which enables me to play sounds on television, good quality, and also full hd movies!

Well I guess Im probably going to go with the Logitech system, seeing as its much cheaper and it looks like I may be getting more for money bass wise.

It also appears as though Klipsch no longer sells any Promedia 5.1 setups like they used to, so I guess Klipsch is out of the running. Sad really. Why would they stop making the 5.1 setups? Did their computer speakers not sell? I could see why if they are charging $500 for a 2.1 setup with 2 6.5 subs that are not really that great...

If you have $500 please, DO NOT BUY A LOGITECH SYSTEM. $500 means that you can buy real speakers, not tiny little bass heavy computer speakers. They are horribly imbalanced and often do not have good midrange, and have really boomy base. For that price you should be looking either into studio monitor + active subwoofer combo, or amp + DAC + booksehfl speakers.

Hey G80FTW, really? I once asked someone back in the day if I could hook up my two car's two 10 inch subs (in a ported box) plus my car's amp to my computer somehow, but they said it was impossible.

Can you tell me how you did it? I'm in the exact opposite situation. I just came on here to post a question about which sound card to get for a n00b since I've always been okay with my onboard audio since it supports 5.1 - and now that I've seen your post, I'm really interested how you did it, cuz now I have no car, 2 x 10" subs in that ported box & the amp bolted on the back of the box from my previous car, and then 2 x 12" subs in a regular box with two amps bolted on the box, from my most recent car that I just junked yesterday cuz of a seized engine.

For example, how did you get power to the amps? Is there some sort of conversion kit that you can plug something into a wall outlet and route the wire to the amps? I have no clue how it would be done since I was told it was impossible.

Stay away from logitech, fairly poor audio quality. As far as "computer" speakers go it's hard to beat the klipsch promedia lineup, but for the best audio quality it's hard to beat a custom setup, $500 is fairly tight for a complete 5.1 setup but it is doable.

Receiver: (You're pretty much guaranteed to find a better deal on the used market, there are some very good deals on used receivers on places like craigslist a lot of the time.), Denon stuff is good for the money though.

You'll also need speaker wire, 16awg or better should be plenty sufficient for this application. If you're willing to go with a used receiver, PM me and let me know your local craigslist and I can take a look around for you, would probably save you $75-100 on the receiver which would allow you to go with some higher quality speakers.

What's your current sound card?

I would recommend Audiengine A2 or A5 but you want 5.1...

would totally recommend the A2s + subwoofer. The A2s by themselves have plenty of bass, and adding a subwoofer would make your house shake.
