so i finaily got a 4 port router. as of now i got two comps on it. the parents and mine. i have several questions

1. how do i go about setting up file sharring for our network?

2. i want to have a computer dedicated to downloading things like, movies, music, IPTV. then with this computer(my main one) remotly play my media.

3. i have cable internet, can i have my own "web server" and run my own web site from home?

4. if 3 works, what about a game server?

1. Use the networking wizard, also make sure they are in the same workgroup(right click my compuiter). Share a folder or a hard drive by right clicking on it, and enableing it. To see these shared drives/folders use my network places/neighborhood.

2.see number #1

3. Yes use something like an apache server. you will need to forward ports though (easy to do)

4. Game server is eve easier.

If you are interested in doing a game server I would recomend getting faster dsl or even a cable connection.

so for the website, could people out side of my network access my site? how would the domain name work? i cant just make a ".com" with out registering it.

Yes your correct... There are some things you would need to find out... Is your IP address (the number which is given to your specific computer) Dynamic or Static(basically does it change, or stay the same over a few days). If the address stays the same (static) you could very easily go to your own website by doing a http://ip address... But if it changes everyday it would be just a little more difficult.

There is a website www.no-ip.com which is free... You install one of there little programs on your pc, which updates to their website. And you set on their website that you want a specific name to always point to whatever that programs reports your ip as...
IT is free though so you will need to add a link on the need of the url... it would look something lie dirogaswebsite.no-ip.com

This would not change, and would like to whatever you have on your pc.

Anything else?

i need cat5e cable and a crimper. any suggestions?

i want to run one network cable into my room then "branch" it to other computers in here. would i use a hub or a switch?

for the server does in need to be on the router or before the router? does DMZ come into play here?

I believe either DMZ or Port Forwarding would work. For a normal HTTP-only server setup you would forward port 80, or if the router supports it just use DMZ.

Well if they are going to be used a lot downloading at the same time, use a switch.. but if it is mainly for internet access a hub will work...

What I mean is a hub looks like one connection to the router, so both computer get the same inormation, if it needs it or not.

A switch assigns an ip address to each computer and then only sends the applicable information.

Second question: Don't use dmz unless your forced to. You would use the no-ip thing, and then that request would go to your router via port 80. you forward that to your computer via a local ip (assign that to a mac address so it is always the same) and it will always work.

You could use dmz, but it opens your computer up to the internet, where a router does a great job. you only need to forward one port, which takes 10-20 seconds total.

If you need more help doing this, i could help you on aim or msn... All i would need is your router model number.
