My Sound Stopped Working

This morning when I got on my computer, I noticed that sounds were not playing. Mute was not on. Speakers work fine (tried them w. MP3 player). Devices working properly. Rebooted system; no change. Booted into other OS, and everything was fine, so it's not a hardware problem. Funny thing is, I was listening to music last night before bed, left my computer on all night, came this morning and there was no sound. As far as I can tell, nothing changed. This really has me scratching my head. I've tried to remember if I installed anything or made any changes. I installed one little program, but everything was working fine after that, and since I didn't even reboot, I have no idea how the problem would just start out of the blue. I uninstalled the program just in case, but still nothing. Does anyone have any ideas at all what the problem could be?

I'm running Vista Ultimate RC2 and have been for 4 months. Never had this problem before.

Thanks.

Having run RC1 briefly I didn't have time to go over the device manager or whatever is used now at the time. But at least on XP you would go there and right on the item listed as your sound or sound card and choose the update driver option to see those reinstalled. You may still find it under the "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" heading.

Driver Rollback Worked

I tried to update the driver, but it said it was already using the most recent one. Then I tried to roll back to the previous driver. That did the trick. The strange thing is that I never installed a new driver, so I'm not sure how the driver changed and how there was a driver to roll back to. It must have done it on its own. Just checked, and windows update installed the driver all by itself the night the problem started. It wasn't even a required update, but only a recommended one. I'm not sure how that happened without my even knowing it! Anyway, I have sound now! Computing without sound just isn't the same. It's true that you don't appreciate something until you lose it.

After a certain point drivers no longer support a specific model or the OS being run. I'm currently having fun trying to get the EAX con for the Creative model card here to work! Only the initial beta drivers used for RC1 and RC2 are seen at the Creative Labs support site. I was able to get the speaker setting and part of the sound mixer working but.... just like when 98 first came out; "where's the drivers? Vista is out and none found?". (MS did have some software updates for their older mice and keyboards how convenient)
