My PC is slower than its specs

Hello everyone, i am a really new member here, actually joined 1 minute ago. I've come here to help others with building computers and minor problems, but i have one major problem myself.

My computer is extremely slow... here are its specs: 1GB Ram, Nvidia GeForce 7300LE(256 MB), Pentium(R) D CPU 2,66 GHZ. I've tried ad-ware, ccleaner, registry mechanic and much more. nothing helped! The computer is still running 3x slower than my cousin's computer, and he has 512 mb ram, nvidia geforce 6500(150 mb or so) and 2,11 GHZ!

What kind of CPU do you have AMD or Intel if you have AMD then go into the bios and turn off AMD cool and Quite if you have Intel do the same thing but on Intel its call Speedstep I think. If that helps then there you go if not then post back here for more help.

I have intel...
Also, it depends on the type of cpu. The intel Pentium D is based off the intel pentium 4(netburst architecture), while if your friends pc is running an athlon X2 or core 2 duo, it would be quite a bit faster. How old is your windows installation? Sometimes that can hinder performance if your running a 2-3 year old install. Also, your hard drive could just be getting old or slow, which can slow down responsiveness of the entire machine.

Fatback, are you sure? I don't wanna get into this stuff. ok, i will restart and enter bios and try.
My windows installation is 2 days old, actually. i've reinstalled the os. also, i have 64 bits, and this is 32. do you think i should get windows xp 64 bits edition?

See what kinda read speeds your drive is getting, as i said earlier a sluggish hard drive can slow down your whole system.

i have no idea if this is good or bad... Minimum: 37,6 MB/sec
Maximum 66.1MB/sec. when i stop and start it says minimum 40 mb/sec now. i'm confused

I don't think 32 or 64 bit would matter but I do know most of the time when people come into my computer shop complaining that there computers are no running at the specified specs It is usually because cool and quite or speedstep is on. It could be 100 things making you computer slow but you can't know what it is until you rule all of them out then if it's none of those we keep trying until you figure it out.

Kinda seems on the lower end..but within reason i would say for an IDE hard drive. How much RAM does task manager show is being use? (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) Also.. do you have video drivers and whatnot installed?

I have 1 gb of ram. btw, i did a ad-ware scan recently, and it seems that my computer is a hell lot faster. but i still have problems running flash. flash lags like hell. and i didn't test playing a game.

Edited my post above, might wanna re read. Sounds to me though like you may not have gpu drivers installed.

Of course i have video cards installed.
I'm not sure if it has dust or not, but i will try looking later.
And i know of the ctrl alt delete shortcut.

Total 785900(WTF)
Available 402848 and rising
System cache: 421704

Oh, and i've changed the VGA memory share size in the bios from 64 to 256. does that change anything?

The reason its showing 700some megabytes is because you have an onboard graphics card, and its sharing with the main memory. A dedicated graphics card would help video performance by quite a bit, and could be whats causing your computer to run "slow".

I changed it back to 64. I bought this computer 1-2 years ago, and it's 4 times slower, it used to run so fast...
Well, like i said before, the hard drive slows down over time, also, now that you have owned it for awhile you "get used" to its speed per se.

I made a scan with Hijack(deeper anti-adware scanner). But i need experienced people to tell me if something is wrong.

Which OS are you running? If it's a 64 bit version and you only have 1gb of ram, that is your culprit. get 2gb or more. Pentium D's are also not very good.
