My New iBook :D

This is the new(ish) iBook I ordered! I'm ordering the OS soon. All thats wrong with it is a simple backlight problem I'm going to fix. It's only running at 500mhz, 192mbs of ram, and a 10gig hard drive, but I also ordered some stray parts to upgrade it so all is well, here are some pics!

Yeah, this one was $20 and the other was $250, it just wasn't worth it in the end. All that (I assume) is wrong with it is the common loose wire defect iBooks tend to have.

Why did you buy this? I bought an ibook g3, maxed out the memory... ran panther and it was painfully slow. 20$ is a snag though.

I wanted to start fixing laptops and this was a reallllly cheap way, and, I think I know whats wrong so I just got a basically new iBook for 20 dollars. I can buy upgrades for dirt cheap on ebay too, bringing the ram up to 512mb-1gb of ram and upgrading the processor to much higher.

ibook g3 max memory is 576. 512 stick and 64 integrated. If you could some how put a 700mhz g3 chip in there you could use that laptop for web browsing. My 500 mhz one couldn't cut it with panther. Maybe if you put ubuntu on it...

The CPU in iBooks (and most if not all other Macs) is integrated into the logic board. The only way you'd be able to upgrade it is to swap out the entire logic board which wont be worth the cost.

I also ordered a BUNCH of random G3 parts including 3 600mhz logic boards and that was like $15 US including shipping so I'm pretty content with this, I just wanted a mac that I could use for one year, also I wanted a basic laptop for web browsing that isn't like 8 pounds and heats up to like 300F each time I use it. (Extreme exaggeration) I love Macs and am dying to use one and this is a cheap product with a cheap fix. I plan on collecting Macs so this seemed like a cheap and good start.

In my experience Apple Laptops get just as hot, if not hotter than a lot of laptops.

Sounds like you got a job cut out for you. While it's not the best computer and won't run a lot of todays software unless you can get Tiger on there, it sounds like good experience for you anyway. $20 seems a tad steep to me for a broken 500mhz iBook, but then again I'm a cheap bastard...233mhz G3 iMac - $5, 700mhz G4 iMac - Free, Core Duo Macbook with backlight issue - $20.

If your anything like I was at a younger age, though, it won't matter that it's outdated, it will still be a fun experience.

$20 is an awesome deal for an iBook, even a G3 if all that is wrong is the backlight. They still resell in working condition for around $100.

Like I said, I'm a cheap bastard, lol. Just because I wouldn't pay that much doesn't mean fair market value indicates it's a great deal.

Only a idiot would pay that price anyway, just cause they sell for that much doesn't mean they are actually worth it. Only someone who has no common sense would pay that much.

I don't disagree. But it's not very hard to find an idiot.

Haha, it seems I am just like you but in a PC version, I pick up old dells and such that have problems like hard drive corruption and such, for free and fix them up for fun. I usually resell them back on my local ad listings or craigslist for a small price, about $50 or so.

If you can get it for free and fix it up for less then you sell good deal, plus depending on the age of the computer probably worth it, you have some common sense.

Sorry for the Semi-Necro Post but I thought since the point of this post was to show off the iBook I'd post some pics of the finished project so here they are!

So with those system specs what can you do with that computer? What version of OSX are you running? I see it is server edtion but which one?

I would put Panther, but I don't have any money right now, since I'm about to spend $50 on 5 more macs, it's such a steal too! A Power Mac g3 and four more iMacs :D
