My new computer, maybe

OK, I haven't built a computer from scratch in almost 10 years. I haven't forgotten how, but, some of the in's and out's have changed since I last tried this. What I am looking for is someone to give me a bit of a spot check in the parts that I am considering. And maybe a few suggestions wouldn't hurt either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the parts I have in mind:

THERMALTAKE VJ40001W2Z Aluminum/Plastic Mid Tower Case

CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W SLI/CrossFire Active Power Supply

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3L LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500

I have the following that I plan to transfer to the new computer:

Nvidia GeForce FX 5200

(2) IDE hard drives

Sony DVD-RW Optical Drive

Any thoughts? :)

gota make sure that the MB has enough IDE ports. also, you're running a core 2 quad with the FX5200? i dont suppose there would be a problem, just that, the 2 are very far apart.

As long as your 5500 has a PCI-E x16 interface, it should be OK. AGP or PCI cards will not fit your new motherboard.

Also, I think you'll want to upgrade your drives to SATA 300 :) Much faster performance and easier to install :P

But other than that, looks like a fairly nice build. Although you may want to look into the Q6600 Quad Core rather than the Q8200, it's a much better processor and cheaper, too.

The FX5200 is like 3-5 years old, something like that.
Nvidia have gotten to the 9 series and than above that.
Plus it is a AGP card, not PCI or PCI-E, it just won't fit with a mobo that has a socket 775 for the Core 2's, they are just too new, sorry mate.

Thanks everyone, I knew I would miss something. The whole reason I was transferring anything was because I was trying to cut some cost, I will just have to buy a new video card too.

The 8200 is $169.99 and the 6600 is $197.99. It may be better, but it is not cheaper. Still, it is listed as more stable, I may go ahead and just spend the extra $30.

OK, lets try this again:

Same Case

Same Power Supply

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

WINTEC AMPX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

SPARKLE SX96GT2048D2-HP GeForce 9600 GT 2GB 256-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

I still will most likely carry over one of the hard drives (after I move everything into it)

What do you think?:)

looks like a pretty good rig. just a question. are you planning to game on it? if you are, maybe you can spend 10 more bucks and get a 4850 512mb or something similar. the 4850 is a big improvement from the 9600gt

Not really planning on doing to much gaming, just minor stuff that is not graphic intensive. Mostly, I use it for video and movie streaming.

OK, so ended up going in a different direction. I should have post this configuration before I bought all of my parts, but... we won't go into that.

Here is my final check list, again, just want a few suggestions.

1 of: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 - Hard drive 250 GB - internal - 3.5" -
SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 16 MB

2 of: Corsair XMS2 4 GB (2 X 2 GB) PC2-6400 800 MHz

1 of: AMD HD9500WCGDBOX Phenom 9500 Quad Core Processor 2.2GHz 4MB cache 95W Thermal Design Power Processor"

1 of: EVGA 113-M2-E113-TR nForce 730a and GeForce 8300 AMD Motherboard

1 of: OCZ OCZ600SXS StealthXStream 600W Power Supply with Four +12V rails, ATX, and 120mm Fan

1 of: Mid-tower Case with Clear Side

1 of: SPARKLE SX96GT2048D2-HP - Graphics adapter GF 9600 GT - PCI Express 2.0 x16 - 2 GB DDR2 - DVI ( HDCP ) - HDTV out"

Any thoughts?:D

No, do NOT go with the 9500 quad, it may have the bug, and they are so much slower and worse at overlocking than intel, and have the old 65nm process. If you want to go amd then go with the phenom 2's, like this.

These beat most of the core2's in benchmarks.

Well, I guess that I will have to upgrade again later. I already bought it, so Hopefully it will last a little while until I can get another.
