So I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC30, and I'm trying to edit video that's on it. I plugged in the cable (not sure what it's called.. its thick and silver), but when I try to open it up in Adobe Premier Elements, I go to capture and it says "Capture Device Offline." I have it on "play/edit" mode but it still doesnt work. I also tried it in Microsoft Movie Maker and got a similar error message. Anyone have any experience with this?

first piece of advise....read the manual...im a guy and i dont like to read manuals but they actually tell u how to do that kinda stuff...u might need to set the camera on a certain setting...the thick silver cable is probably a USB cable...if one side is flat with 1/2 covered by a white piece then its a USB (universal serial bus) most likely a 2.0 (if its a new camera)...also u may have got a cd with it which would be a driver for your camera...maybe that helped lol :D

Ya, I have a HandyCamm too and you need to install the drivers that came on a disc with your camera, then it should recognize it. ;)
