Some time ago I created a number of music files on my Linux system that worked perfectly fine in that environment. I recently transferred most of them over to my Windows 7 desktop to try and consolidate all of my music on to one PC, and in most cases everything's just fine. One problem I've run into though as that some of the classical music files are popping up with errors because I've given them names that are too long - happens when you're trying to get the composer, title, movement, etc into the name! Linux obviously didn't have a problem with the length of the file names, but as far as Windows is concerned they're so long it won't even recognize them as a sound file that I can try to access in order to cut the length of the name down. The usual process of trying to right click doesn't work - all I get is the option of which program to try and open the file with, none of which work - and everything I can think of to try and open it simply to change the name comes up with the standard error message of 'the file name is too long'.
Short of running the files back through a Linux system again to correct the names, is there anything within the Windows environment (or something I can quickly download) that will allow me to access the file to cut the name length down?
And by the way, what is the character limit for file name length as far as Windows is concerned?
