Multiple Routers, Not recognizing one another

I'm trying to connect my wireless router (Linksys BEFW11S4 v4), which was previously connected to a DSL connection through a switch (with no problems), to a wired router (Linksys BEFSR41 v2) thats currently connected directly to a cable modem. I've tried this using several different possible configurations, but no matter what I do, computers connected to the wireless router can access router set-up only, and not the internet. I have even tried removing existing wired router and connecting wireless directly to modem, but the same thing happens. Anyone know what would cause this, and how to fix it?

do you need to use a user name or password to access the web, a lot of broadband providers us PPPoE authentication, you will need to set your wireless router up with your user data.

My suggestion for that setup would be use the wireless one as you're router than the other one as just a switch. DO NOT connect anything it the wired one's WAN port as you won't see it on the network. Disable router funtions(firewall, DHCP, etc) on the one to just be used as a switch... This should do it

This sounds like a good idea, but when I connect the wireless router to the modem, it doesn't seem to recognize the connection. I've tried the reverse, using the wireless as a switch, but this doesn't seem to work either.

Nope, the internet light on the wireless router remains off when connected to the modem, and sometimes comes on briefly when connected to an ethernet port on the wired one, but even then I can't get online except thru the wired.

I don't care about the internet light ATM, I just mean the connection light, weither or not it's even detecting that something's plugged in. However, as you just posted, I bet it's just something not set up correctly... Not much I can tell you there other than try and find the info either from the other router or your ISP.

In between posts I did contact linksys, and after several tests, they suggested a firmware upgrade. I downloaded and installed the new firmware, and the same thing is happening: the wireless router shows solid lights for all ethernet ports something is connected to, but the internet is usually off, although on some tests (there doesn't seem to be a pattern) it does blink sporadically.

Well, I contacted linksys again today, and this time, after performing many of the same repetitive tests and a few new ones, they opted to send me a new wireless router. I just hope when i get the new one it works without too much fuss. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

Usually when you connect a switch to a switch which is what you are doing you need a crossover cable. Unless the ports on the switch are smart enough. But since the light is not coming on I would say try a crossover. Also, for the internet settings on the wireless router make sure you are using a different subnet. For instance, the wireless subnet could be 192.168.3.0 255.255.255.0 and the wired could be 192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0. The for the IP address of the wireless switch you would want to give it a 192.168.2.X IP address. Use the ping command it can be real helpful if you connect a PC to the wireless run a continuous ping like this ping 192.168.2.1 -t. This way as soon as it is connected you will know. Also check the gateway IP address on the wireless router.

Well, I suppose I could try this, but as I said, linksys has already agreed to send me a replacement, which is probably on its way by now. Also, (I probably should have mentioned this before), several months ago, when we first got the 2 routers, We had connected them just to see if we could, and it worked on the first attempt, I think it was port 4 on wired to WAN on wireless. I don't think I adjusted any settings between that time and beginning this troubleshooting.
