more troubles

hi i'm kinda new but anyway i've been having problems with my sound on the computer.....it doesn't work bloody.
the head phones don't work
computer speakers don't work
nor do external speakers.

it says all sound devices working normaly (device manager) but in control pannel it says "no devices detected"

prevously all the external devices worked but my computer got sick(virus) so i got i friend to fix it for me(went overseas), since then the sound doesn't work, would like to know if it's programing or the sound card could be stuffed, how could i check it? how can i bring the sound back to irratate my neighbours?
run on win XP...
help much appreciated.

Hey Alex, it does sound like your sound card my of been busted... if it travelled overseas, then there is a big chance that is was mis-handled/dropped/broken etc.

While WinXP can see if the card is connected (like it's saying) it connect tell if the actual connections (where you plug you speakers etc.) are not working.

Here are a couple of things I can suggest to you...
1). If you have a PCI card, make sure that On-board sound is disabled in the BIOS

2). Go to Start -> Accessories (or Entertainment) -> Volume Control then click "Options" and then "Properties" then make sure you sound card is selected in the box on the top

If those don't work try this last idea I have
3). Get the brand name of your Sound card,Then go onto your sound card manufactuers website and look for the latest driver for you card, download it. Do Not Install It Yet!!!!. Go into Device Manager, then delete any referance to your sound card in there. Now install the latest driver and reboot machine.

Let us know what happened, or what for someone else to see if they have another idea. But I think they might work.
 
it would help to know some details. Like what sound card it is...

If it is a PCI card, try uninstalling it and it's drivers compeletly through the device manager. If windows autodetects it and reinstalles it, then the card is "good". That means the card is still functioning.

Open up your computer and look at the card. Go ahead and pull it out. See if you can see any damage to it at all. Check the connections between the card and jacks to make sure they are still intact.

When you put it back in, try to put it in a different PCI slot if you can.

Once everything is back together, download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website and reinstall. I would actually download the drivers before you start all of this, so when windows redetects the card and asks for drivers, you can point it to the ones you downloaded instead of letting it find some, then you installing your own.

what is PCI?
i tried step 2 but it says i have no devices, tried installing but still no, maybe the guy "forgot" to give me a sound card?

Okay then try this

Goto

Start -> Run -> Dxdiag.exe

once that is open click on the Sound Tab
Look for the device section and tell me the name (if any) of the device.
 
well, what can i say, that once enoying start up noise sounds bloody good.
I fixed this problem just now with the help of a friend over the phone and i'd like to share what i learned.
This guy is bloody good and we sorted the problem out in 20min.

The problem was that i was missing a driver or all sound drivers.

In my device manager there was a sperate icon with a question mark next to a section of media sound devices or something-not in sound audio devices but seperate icon or section.

This meant i had to find out my motherboard id number or smth. he laughed as explained this is where most of the guys that fix computers make their $$$

You have to open up one of the pannels in your computer and look next to the CPU in small size 8 letters there's a code, nexto to the bar code i think it was. mine was like 661fx rt- or smth this is the id- it also said foxconn which is the manufacturere naturaly. go to their web site into drivers and match the motherboard id etc, choose sound drivers from a list and download, mine was 23mb. set it up and restart, how good are those start up or refrsh sounds when you haven't heard jack from your speakers for a few months? (yes i'm stupid)
So yeah, he said you can't get our motherboard code without opening it up and looking, kinda dumb (design)but that worked 4 me!
