Monitor - Digital vs. Analog

I am going to order a new Dell desktop this week. The package that I am looking at includes a 17" analog flat screen monitor. Going to a digital monitor is an upgrade. What are the differences between digital and analog monitors? I use the computer for the internet, music, photos and word processing. THanks for any opinions/input.

When you say flat screen, you just mean the standard CRT screens, not the flat pannel/LCD, right? Though, I'm not really sure of a difference, or even if they have a digital CRT as they have analog inputs...

Now you can have a digital or analog input for a LCD. My LCD has both on it(heh, I actually just use it so I can have two computers connected to it ;) ) Quality wise, I can't really tell a difference. So far the only difference is that digital automatically fills the whole screen with the image. Analog, it has to adjust the picture. That's it, with LCD's at least... And it's very easy to convert the digital video to analog, so I can't see there being any real difference.

I am referring to the digital flat panel and analog flat panel monitors (15" and 17") Dell has listed on their site. What are the differences, and is it worth it to upgrade to digital? I have been using an old CRT for years. Thank you!

i think its worth the upgrade to digital. i had a 18 inch dell monitor that had analog and digital and i could tell the diference bewtween quality. how much does it cost to upgrade?

$150 upgrade which I really do not have. How much difference in quality?

Yes some monitors show a difference between digital and analog. On my LCD I too have both inputs and have tried both. analog seemed worse and appeared more like a CRT but when plugged into digital the image was more sharp as LCD's are famous for. I really cannot find the words to explain the difference in image but there is one. Some LCD's however I have read don't appear to make a difference with whatever connection you choose. Also I've read reviews where LCD's showed more ghosting on the analog connection where there was much less on the digital connection. With a fast enough LCD you prob. need not worry though. I see no ghosting on my Viewsonic VX924.

I have never tired a side by side comparison with identical screens and such, but I still don't think it'll make a huge difference between analog and digital. The monitor still works the same, and the input is still basically the same. I mean look at the converters, or a VGA and a DVI connection. They are both very similar and contain basically all the same pins, just the DVI has a few more. As long as you run your LCD at it's native resolution, you should have plenty sharp images either way.

Now, the digital LCD might be a better display in general...fast responce time, higher resolution, etc...
