Modem matter again.

Hey all,

I promise that this WILL be the last time that I come here regarding this issue. As some of you know, I have been experiencing a problem with my Emachine laptop's modem (Conexant 56K). Just a moment ago, I troubleshot the situation, and was given info that the "troubleshooter" determined that a COM port might be disabled. Following instructions which were also given, I double-clicked on Ports (COM & LPT) for list expansion. I was then to click on the port that the modem was using, and then click Enable. However, the absolute only thing listed in that area was ECP Printer Port (LPT1). NO COM PORTS SHOWING!!

I really hate to be beating this matter, here, but I have a sneaking suspicion that all may be well with the modem itself - and that there is something else which is halting its operation. I am also being told that there is some type of conflict going on, but I don't know how to isolate it (if that is indeed the case).

One other thing: In Device Manager, under PCMCIA Adapters, there is an ENE CB1410 Cardbus Controller listed. Should this be there? If not, could it be the cause of my ills?

is ur modem recognized at all? is there any signs of a modem when you check the device manager?

the PCMCIA should be the slot on the side that looks like it can fit a floppy drive, but not. so its probably the driver for it.

what you can try is to delete the driver, through device manager if there is one. then restart.
go to control panel>add hardware and let it scan to see if it detects anything like the modem

try downloading this. im not sure if its the driver, but try installing it.

First, a huge thanks to you for your search & forwarding of that driver link. I have downloaded it, and will install it to see what happens - as soon as I finish this to you. My modem is recognized in Device Manager (Conexant 56K data/fax modem), and the troubleshooting command states that it is working properly. I have even uninstalled the driver, and found that Windows did not have a driver for it, in its data base, after restarting the laptop. Let me clarify that I am referencing an internal (integrated) modem. There is, indeed, a PCMCIA slot on the side of the unit, and the seller had been using such with a wireless modem on his broadband setup. I had called him, last night, to see if he knew what I might be able to do within the regards of defeating this problem. He said: "It's very simple...all you have to do is turn it on". He was rather busy, then, but told me to call him back this evening, and he would walk me through it. Now, I don't know WHAT he's talking about, by stating what he did. All that I can assume is that he, maybe, disengaged the integrated modem (somewhere in the bios) so as not to cause conflicts with his wireless modem. But, it will be interesting to see what he's going to try to walk me through when I call him, later this evening (providing that the newly downloaded driver doesn't afford a favorable outcome).

But, once again, I really appreciate your help with this issue - and will come back to let you know how I make out.

ComputerHakk,

I said that I'd come back with an update. It turns out that the link you provided was for the wrong driver. As earlier mentioned, however, your attempt to help me was - and is - very meaningful.

I didn't call the seller back, for what he was talking about because (as it turned out) I sold that laptop, earlier this evening. I explained to the buyer about the problem I encountered with the modem. But he plans on using it with a wireless setup - like the fellow that I bought it from. I sold it for the same 300 clams that I paid for it, just a few weeks back, and will have to wait a little before I can get my hands on a new one.

Take care, my friend.
