missing photos

my dads digital camera and mine both take XD memory cards and his has more storage capacity so i sometimes take his card in my camera to places where i would fill my card up ie parties.

swapping them over between cameras has worked fine in the past, even though his is an olympus and mine is a kodak and one takes higher resolution pics.

but last night i used his card at a party and when i try to transfer the photos onto my computer they don't show up in the "select and transfer" window. i can view them on the camera itself but when i try and transfer them only the photos that were taken on dads camera show up in the window. its really strange because it recognises there are 126 photos on the card but only displays the 30 odd that were taken on dads camera. its really strange because it has worked fine in the past.

does anyone have any ideas of what to do?

cheers, kain.

One, just use Windows Explorer to find the pics and copy them from there, and two, try turning on Show Hidden Files and Folders in the folder options place, to see if they show up/

yeah just after i posted i thought that i should try going through explorer. i had tried just opening the device contents from my computer but it kept on not responding i think the two diferent formats were confusing it. i am copying em from explorer now its taking ages tho.

cheers, kain.

just after i posted that time i got an error message and they stopped copying. GOSH. i hate it when a simple task becomes so damn complicated.

I have no clue how your camera's work right off, but check though file explorer. Usally camera's make their own directories, sometimes even multiple ones if the card was removed and re-inserted. Either way, I wonder if the camera's only reading one directory...

yeah you have to go to the device, then you can select between internal memory or the memory card and then becuase the card has been used in two different cameras there is an olympus folder and a kodak folder. there is actually two olympus folders come to think of it i'm not sure why that is???

cheers, kain.

I wasn't refering to the internal memory, but that is a good point... Be sure you check that :P I was simply refering to the memory card. I have seen some cameras do stuff like KOD001, KOD002, KOD003 for each time the card was put back intothe camera! But you say there are only two folders? I assume neither contain the images you're looking for?

Another rather simple solution, have you tried just searching the whole card for *.jpg (IE all image files)?

no there are three folders, two olympus ones which are named 100OLYMP and 101OLYMP and then kodak one is named 103LS755 which is the model of my camera. the photos i want are in the 103LS755 folder but when i try to copy them from there into a folder on the C: drive it doesn't work. it get through one - three and then gets an error message or stops the computer responding altogether.

no i don't have a card reader but if i can't get it to work by tomorrow i am going to borrow one from a friend.

cheers, kain

A card reader or using the camera won't make any difference if you can view it under My Computer/Explorer. I beleive that's how the kodak works, but I actually don't even have a cable for mine, so it's hard to say :P Most do work just like a card reader, though.

So you get errors when you try to copy the folders? Sounds like you just got some currupt files, or perhaps a failing card. Could you of removed the card while it was still processing?

i got that card reader of my friend today and managed to sucessfully get all the photos off the memory card. stoked!

anyway i swapped cards with dad so i won't have to chop and change between cameras now.

thanks for everyone's input.

cheers, kain
