OK heres my problem, i recently got a new program (Guitar Pro v5) that uses MIDI output to play the notes onscreen in realtime but my "new" computer (about 6 months) cant play the MIDI files but my old computer (about 3-4 years) can? They both have AC'97 sound??? andi really cant find nething...so plz help would reaaaaally be awesome. THX!

That would be due most likely to a configuration problem since both systems run onboard sound. You can try updates for the mother board as well as the AC 97 sound to see if that helps there. Have you tried reinstallation of the program to see if the first installation was missing something? Sometimes a driver will be copied into a folder but not made active at the time of the installation. Hopefully you don't have a bad MIDI port on the board itself.

Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio Tab
Look at the bottom. What does it say your MIDI music playback device is? It should mention a Wavetable device.

Also:

Device Manager -> Sound, Video and Game Controllers -> click the "+" to expand -> right-click "AC'97 Audio" or similar -> Properties -> Properties tab -> click the "+" on MIDI Devices and Instruments; click on AC'97 Audio or similar, then click Properties at the bottom. Make sure the radio button is activated for "Use MIDI features on this device".
Click OK repeatedly until you're out of Device Manager

It may be listed as "MPU-401 Compatable MIDI Device" when looking there instead of being seen as AC'97. That will be the usual seen in the DM. I think OvenMaster is thinking along the same lines about right clicking the item there and choosing the update driver option as well as scanning for hardware changes. If you see anything under the sound and game controllers section in the DM with a yellow exclaimation mark on it you found your problem. Hopefully it won't turn out to be a hardware issue.

Indeed I was :), but also thinking about enabling an obscure setting... which I had to do once to get MIDI sound to work on my old DEC Venturis. Took me a week to find the solution to this and it stuck with me.

Which version of Windows were you running there? That's going back a few years if you were running a DEC setup. That would have been more or less on an office type system over the more user friendly ideas seen since that time. I can assume you had one made by Ashton-D.E.C. there.

'Twas a DEC Venturis 5133, built by DEC in Canada in 1997; Pentium I @ 133MHz, 96MB of ram, 1MB integrated video RAM, 4.3GB hard drive running Win95c. NLX motherboard in a case only 4" tall, but a 17"x16" footprint! I'm surprised I managed to do all I did with it. My local electric power company still uses a few of them in their business office!

I still have it and use it as my backup machine when this one goes on the fritz:D

That looks about what my AST junker looked before tossing it! The WD 1.4gb drive added to replace the 500mb whatever on a used desktop still works reliably in a Packard Bell I586 model. That old AST I486 didn't make it. Apparently AST didn't either. Here the only thing seen in the DM would be what I posted earlier due to never using the onboard sound. In XP the settings would be adjusted a little differently then what you did in 95. There's a big difference there since XP is essentially based on NT.

Agreed... I was also referring to XP but had adapted what I remember from 95 for MrBucket's problemo.

ok under my "MIDI music playback" it says "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" with no other option and in the DM under My "Realtek AC'97 Audio" properties tab, it shows that "Realtek AC'97 Audio" is under "MIDI Devices and Instruments". Ill try to scout out newer Realtek AC'97 drivers even tho that these drivers SHOULD be newer (ill have to check tho) because i havent update my working older computer yet, this all just doesnt make sense to this being a much more powerfull computer and a newer model in the same product line...hmmmmmmmm

When you went into the DM, did you do as I'd suggested and make sure the MIDI activation radio button was selected?
