Microsoft certification, is it worth it?

Has anyone else taken the class to receive their microsoft certification? I am seriously considering as in starting to look ar some new career choices in the next few years. I'm just curious as to g what all it covers and whether or not it opens up any career opportunities having it. Thanks!

I just had a lecture today by a ITS manager. He said don't get certified in something general; get specific. SharePoint is very much in demand today and there aren't enough SharePoint designers out there to fill the desired quota. He also said people like that can make as much as $300/Hour.

I'm currently training for it, not necessarily to use it as my main qualification, but as a platform. Will then be training in Win 7 to enterprise level with in the next few months, and after that getting a job and carry on training (I love it, even if I never use it will carry on getting more and more qualifications).

Yes, it does open doors, however it depends what doors you want open. If you want to be first, second, third line support, field support or another support role in the IT industry, it will be a good way to get your foot in the door of some jobs.

I agree with the other two though, specialise and don't think being MS cert is enough

Its another credential and could be your competition applying for a job. I was a electrical planner and did it with Project management 25 yrs ago. Or many years ago. Im retired now and have been for 3 yrs. Im saying any credential you can get is in your best interest whether its office, or project or what ever. you have to compete and many are qualified. worked 37 yrs and done. good luck.

Sweet! Good to know. My job will help pay for it but the catch is you have to do classes online. So next question is what schools are worth a hoot online?

If you are asking with respect to their commercial value, then online courses do not get as much credit as the alternative.
But if you are asking whether they actually teach you something or not then I would say it is completely dependent on you and how much you want to do this course and your interest in it.

I wasn't big on it. Corp was willing to pay for it. All the people that was going to the microsoft certification class had already finished at school. It was a review and expensive and to prep for exam only. Even took a class for server administration i think it was called. about $2000 for a 3 day class. my boss asked me why i was taking that class. I said because it was asked and you approved it. he blew it off.
Mine was mostly electronics but to late and did not care. didn't have to. almost over.

if you took the classes and confident and did not forget then go for it.
If you need a quick review of everything you studied then its worth while.
The classes ive taken was a intense overview of everything you studied.
have to understand it was a overview for certification only. A crash course.

Gotcha, I'm looking into some online programs to see what sounds interesting. I'm liking the idea of doing the I.t. Pro route, seems to fit the most with my interests.
