Microphone or soundcard problem?

I like to talk to my friends a lot over ventrilo and most of the time everything sounds ok. But every once and a while I will go to talk and it will just make a loud scratching sound in their speakers. It'll come and go and I do nothing to make it go away it just does. Is this a soundcard or a microphone problem?
 
Try using a different microphone, then using the microphone on a different computer. This will probably help you figure out which one it is.
 
Do the people you talk to hear the sound also? If they dont, it probably your speakers, if they do, its probably your microphone.
