microphone not working

hey so I brought an old mic with me from home. I hooked it up to my computer, and I get a message telling me that i connected an audio device. I confirm thats it's a mirophone and click OK.

It doesnt work though. All important volume bars are at MAX, the mic is "selected" in the volume control, bass boost on, NOT muted (there isnt even a mute option for me). Connected to the right jack.....but it doesnt work. So I figured its probably broken since its old.

Buy a new one. Same thing happens when i connect it, the compute detects it and I select that its a microphone. Same deal with all the details, and just to make sure I tried it out in all the jacks. Nothing. When i tried recording something it told me that no signal was even received. So does this have something to do with my soundcard? It works fine otherwise never had a problem with audio.

much appreciated if someone could help me out

What soundcard, mic you using ?

EDIT: Im guessing your using Windows XP
Go to Control pannel > Sounds and Audio Devices > click on the voice tab > and then click on test harware.
If nothing happens i would look for the latest soundcard drivers on the net and install them then try again.

Good luck dude im of to bed!

The biggest problem I see is that people will unmute the mic from the sound proporites, but not the recording proporties! To check this, double click on the speaker on the task bar(or Control pannel > Sound...) Click options, then proporties. Click Recording, be sure the mic is selected below, then click ok. Now you should have a new set of sliders. Be sure the mic is selected.

Wow, i thought I'd done everything, but u really helped me out there The_other_One. Under the sound properties there was one option unchecked..."monitor input." For some reason I hadn't even though of checking that one.

Thanks alot man!
