microphone not working. very very frustrating

hi,

i have a realtek ac'97 driver. it comes with sound effect manager.
my microphone is not working at all (not even in sound recorder).:confused:

i tried evrything from muting the mic in volume control, to disabling sound effect manager. if i have my sound effect manager on when i plug in the mic the computer gives me a warning saying "wave volume control not found". if i disable sound effect manager it does not give me this message anymore but still the mic is not working.

please help

your sure you have it hooked through the right port? (my comps mic is orangish) You should of had to mess with any settings to get your mic to work.....
