Microphone dosen't work! help!

ok so,

i have 3 different microphones and none of them seem to work on my pc. i've tested them on a friend's pc and they work fine, so the problem is from my computer.
the microphone is connected in the right place and is not muted. i've tried activating microphone boost and alternate microphone on the audio settings but it still refuses to record.

i have:
windows xp sp 2
1.25gb ram
intel celeron 2.40GHz processor

according to everest this are my pc's components related to this:
audio specs
motherboard

any help will be appreciated.
some said that i shoul check if my audio driver is set for 2.1 not 5.1, but how do i do that? step by step :D

Update your sound driver.

Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Find sound controller.
Click the driver tab, update driver and follow the wizard.

Hope that helps.

ok, i've done what you said and now i have an audio confugiration window.
lookig like this and this.
the microphone still dose not work tough, and it is not muted. also, the headphones dont work in their slot, only in the normal pc speakers slot. i still think that somehow it is set on 5.1 and the microphone slot dose not detect the microphone.

stereo mix works fine, i just don't understand whats up with the mic :(
here is a pic showing stereo mix woring.

5138034451
icon on the taskbar, click it to see if the volume setting is ally right

Go into your Main settings settings of your Audio settings as you have been into previously since you posted a picture of it and deselect digital output and select Analogue.
Hopefully this will fix your problem.

done that... and it still won't record :( ... it shows no activity on the microphone. only with with the boost but the only thing it records is that boost actually

Suggest you to uninstall the device in device manager and uninstall the software in Add and remove software; reboot the computer and do another fresh install of adding hardware and software for the sound card to default settings.
If you do not know how to do this or have relevant drivers/software disk I suggest you seek help from some one to assist you.
