Hey,

I have a inventel gateway router with built in adsl modem. I can connect to the internet but I have to use the computer to dial in. All the settings on the router are correct I have entered my username and password but still nothing happens. It says connected on the main page. I need to make this right otherwise my network works over the internet:(

Maybe I am not reading this correctly.. but can you explain these two things..

-but I have to use the computer to dial in
-I need to make this right otherwise my network works over the internet

Im not clear on what the question is exactly, but sounds like a dial up problem. DSL requires authentification, which can be done through the router, instead of the computer. The settings may appear correct, but double check them, and maybe run them across your ISP proveder. Also not you should be using ppoe on the router for dial up.

I am still lost. If you are connected to the internet, and you transfer a file, it transfers over the net? - dummy this down for me please.

where is file transfering to?
whats the speed

If you're saying what I think your saying:
You cannot connect into your wireless router? Correct?

If this is so you should be able to press a RESET BUTTON on the back of your router, these buttons are usually depressed so you will need a pin or some other sort of pointed object to press it. Once pressed, all of your Passwords and other settings will be reset to defaults.

BE CAREFUL When pressing this button because it can make your computer vulnerable to attack if your router controls your firewall and other security services

It is the only way I can connect to the internet. It is using my adsl account coz I get the speeds I am supposed to. The settings I dial into (let me rather say connect) are broadband settings with my user name and password. With my old router (same model same make) it worked as sweet as a nut with the settings I am currently using.
Cant anybody help?

It sounds to me like you are authenticaing via PPoE (point to point over ethernet) which is similiar to PPP (point to point protocol) which is what dial up modems use. Obviously the difference is that one is authenticated over ethernet and the other over a modem.

You need to set this up in your router/modem so its always connected. Or set it up on your windows machine under the networking properties and add PPoE protocol and set it up.

Did your ISP provide a set up CD?

I put in the same username and password I use on my computer for the PPPoe section on my router but it still dont wanna work

Than maybe the ISP required mac address cloneing, or you may have to call them to register the mac of your router with this first.

try to clone first by finding the mac clone option in the router and enter in the mac address of your computers NIC.

start -> run -> cmd (hit enter)

type: ipconfig /all
it will be called physical address

If the router is behind the modem, that shouldn't matter but good thinking none he less.

Can you describe exactly how you have it set up?

Router is always behind the modem(unless its a combo device)...but he said it works when he disc. his router, so i'm assuming its connected behind, but we are given limited info, kinda hard to troubleshoot without knowing the setup of things...blind
