Memory Question

I have a pretty large hard drive on my laptop with about 450 gigs. I have about 250 of those gigs apparently USED and I don't know what the heck is holding all my memory cuz I'd like to delete it.

Is there any way to do a check to see where all the big gobs of memory is being used at? I've been manually checking all my folders but I can't find where this huge ass cache is being used up at. I've checked all the common folders and started to prune the Program Files and Windows files and still can't find anything. I should only have like 30 gigs maximum of used disc space taken up instead of like 250.

Any tips?

You probably have a trojan on your computer that is using a backdoor to turn
your computer into a childporn server. The folders are hidden -- you have to
select show hidden folders in your folder options.

That's one possibility. Another, Windows System Restore has created 250GB
in restore points. Lemme guess, you've got Vista?

I could have a Trojan....my Norton subscription ran out 90 days after I bought my laptop and I've been running on nothing for a while now....I don't do a lot of installing dumb programs so I figured I would be semi-safe. I probably need a new Anti Virus but I don't have any moneyz.

I am also using Windows Vista 32.

I've heard of CCleaner...I usually don't like downloading weird programs like that (non-microsoft programs) which is what I feel keeps me relatively safe in getting viruses...what does it do exactly?

Also, how do I clean up restore points to free up space?

Well...I managed to actually locate a VIDEO cache by complete dumb luck when I went to copy my Document folder over to my External HD and it was like....transfering 100 GIGS...I was like wtf. I checked inside of it and the project files from each Adobe Premiere project I ever started was in there. Little did I know that it copies the videos I edit inside the project files. It took up 100 gigs from the 25 projects or so I had. Then I deleted all the restore points I had which freed up 60 gigs or something. Crap Cleaner took out 5 gigs and yeah...I'm down to only using 45 gigs which is probably a little bit more normal although maybe not perfect but I'll accept that.

Question: How do I prevent System Restore from raping my memory in the future?

I'm on XP, so I don't remember the exact name. I think it's called Task
Scheduler. You go in there, and find the task for System Restore. It will
be set to something like "create a system restore point daily when the
computer is turned on". Change that to once a month instead.

You can turn off system restore, and put it back on when you need it. that also means that some trojans/viruses won't be able to hide in your backups.
