Memory card error

Today I was taking pictures on my Canon digital camera when all of a sudden it would not let me view or take any more photos and displayed 'memory card error' message on the screen. I tried it in another camera and got another error. When I got home and tried to put it in my laptop it is appearing in 'My Computer', but when I click on it, it says "The disk in drive F is not formatted." And asks if I want to format it. I have yet to choose an option because I didn't want to hurt the chances of recovering the photos. ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED! I have a lot of irreplaceable photos on the memory card. Thanks.

This does happen to memory cards, the card becomes corrupt and therefore you get the the message "f drive is not formatted". It usually happens on cheaper memory cards. I have had it happen to me before. But to answer your question , I use a software programs called. Lexar Image Rescue that I got free with my lexar memory card purchase.
here is the link. http://store.lexar.com/?category=25&subcategory=46
but there are many different options out there that do the same think. I don't know if there are any free ones but just google " image recovery software"

This can also happen when you are trying to take pictures with the batteries pretty much dead (i.e. take a picture and the camera shuts off). My parents destroyed a card this way, even after formatting the thing 3 or 4 times pictures taken with the card came out all scrambled and crappy...
