Math Type

I am attempting to edit a 14 page Word technical document which contains 28 statistical equations, most of them simple, in Open Office 3.2 . It has a .docx extension, so I'm assuming it was created in Word 97.

When I bring it up in Open Office I get a message from Math Type that "too many windows are open" and then the document freezes.

Anyone have any idea what's happening here?
 
There should be a docx converter through micrisift that allows it to convert to .doc that is openable by OpenOffice..
 
I'm working on a big document using OpenOffice Writer with Mathtype equations in it, I get a similar problem, small window pops up with heading Mathtype and content "Too Many Windows are open".
Click OK on this about 100 times and finally the small window goes away.

Any suggestion for this problem ?
