Mapping IP to a domain name

Hi,

I have a small network configured at home. One of the machines run a webserver. All the machines can access the web application hosted on the webserver via an IP address. How can I assign a domain name for the IP address where all the users can use to access the web application?

Thanks

You'll need to set up a DNS A record, and probably a se[erate DNS zone... It would probably be best to have a seperate DNS server, and better yet two nameservers on different networks.

You could also try a public DNS server - but they're probably going to want two external IP's to point to...

you can do this inside your router, if your router supports it, take a look around the manual or the config screen for "dynamic DNS". Also, investigate www.dyndns.org . It is a free service,

Below is somethign quoted from my BT Voyager router:

Dynamic DNS

This page allows you to provide Internet users with a domain name (instead of an IP address) to access your virtual servers. Your BT Voyager supports dynamic DNS service provided by the provider 'http://www.dyndns.org' or 'http://www.tzo.com'. Please register this service at these providers first *.

linksys routers have the ability to add the username and pass for your dyndns account. if u have a linksys router and u dont see these options, upgrade ure firmware ;)

this is how i access tons of stuff, my router, VNC, ssh, etc. . .

another place where you can get dynamic DNS is no-ip.com. with them, u can download a program that will update dns whenever ure ip changes, just in case ure router does not have this functionality already.
