Many network/router problems

I have a Linksis wireless g router. I have it set up to go wirelessly to a computer in another room. I keep getting frequent cutouts of the connection which I thought was due to the 2.4 cordless phones I have(and most probably are). But I tried connecting the computer directly into the router itself but I get the same problems. And when I loose connection for the minute and a half it disconnects ( about every 15 minutes) I see the cable light on the normal modem go out while the data light still flashes. I ran some network tests and it said some things failed. Heres the results of what failed:

Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC FAILED
DNSServerSearchOrder (FAILED)
XXX.XXX.X.X (PASSED)

XXX.XXX.X.XXX (FAILED)
Pinging XXX.XXX.X.XXX with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Ping statistics for XXX.XXX.X.XXX:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

(I x'd out the ip numbers)

This test was done while the internet was working. Any ideas on what is going wrong?

Is this a secure network? meaning do you have a PW set for connecying users?

Also Is the router sitting on the floor (carpet)? It may be overheating....

Trizoy: The router is sitting on a desk. I dont think there is a passwrd for connecting users.

jjsevdt: I dont know what you mean by ethernet controller. Do you mean the router or my nic card or somthing diffrent?

Try enabling a password, so i is a secure newtwork. Windows XP doesnt like staying connected to an unsecure network... Maybe something to do with a security risk?

Try it, if it dont work let us know.

I tried to set up a password. In the password box there was a really long password set into it allready. It was like over 10 characters. I put in a new one and hit save settings, after the SETTINGS SAVED! page came up it redirected me back to the password page with the same long password in it, not the one I had typed in.

Ok...what am I missing here? You said that the cable light on your modem was going off. This has nothing to do with your router firmware or passwords. You either have a bad modem or a poor signal coming into your house. Contact your cable provider.

Ok, so the change in firmware did not help. I think it is what ericknit said and that my modem is dying. I have had this one ever since I can remember. Just to be sure is that what happens when the modem is dying (random disconnects)? Because on most of the disconnects I am now seeing that the cable light goes out and the data light slowly blinks.

Connect your modem to the most direct line of your cable input. Like the main line going into the house, run a splitter off that and have one line go to all your tvs and etc taht was perviously connected and then the other to ur modem. That fixed it for me. If that dont work u gotta bad modem...
