M-Audio; not up to the hype?

I had some M-Audio AV30s for about a week. Honestly, I was extremely pleased with the audio. They were clear and had plenty of bass for 2.0 speakers. They also were capable of getting much, much louder than I'd ever care to have them.

Well, after a few days, I noticed my left speaker developing a slight rattle. Since they were purchased locally, I decided to just exchange them. However, as I removed them from my desk, I could hear the rattle was actually something loose inside. Curiosity got the better of me so I popped them open.

I'd call that two bad caps  And this is after ONE WEEK of fairly light use. I'm using some Hercules XPS 2.0 60's now :P

I've heard more troubles from AV30s than AV40s. Either way, I believe the entire bottom lineup has slight quality control issues. My AV40s works perfectly. If you do decide to buy another pair I would highly recommend AV40s. There's a fairly large quality difference between the two models.

Really late reply...sorry :o

Woops :o I'd call that a manufacturing defect ;)

As much as I want to agree, that bulging cap doesn't just happen overnight...well, just about did in my case! But regardless, I call cheap components as well as possible defects.

Yeah, I kind of noticed this trend on Amazon between the AV30s and AV40s. I really wanted the AV30s though since I really didn't have room for anything larger or I probably would have gone with the 40. But I'm very happy with my Hercules :D Smaller, sound just as good (though not quite as capable at high volumes) and actually a few bucks less. Oh yeah, and those AV30s ran HOOOOOT! I know the AV30s had all the power crap built-in, but neither the speakers or power brick get hot at all with these :)

Yeah my AV40s run pretty hot too. Oh another pair of good small speakers would be the Audioengine A2, but they're a bit more expensive.
