Looking for Simple Everyday Speakers

Hi,

I am looking for simple 2.0 or 2.1 Speakers that would give great sound for listening to internet radio, (voice and music), movies, and some music (CD and movies). Most listening will be at low to medium volume.

Currently I have some cheap speakers on one computer and monitor speakers on another computer which sound tinny and give me a headache after a little while.

When looking at all the speakers available, most seem to be catering to gamers and/or audiophiles and the base sound/loudness, is typically more than I am looking for.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Supie

i just got some Logitech R-20 speakers - they were only $39 AUD, and are fantastic!

I highly recommend them... they can go reasonably loud before any distortion, and have decent bass for their size...
good performance for fantastic value

Well, I've listened to a lot of computer speakers, and I've owned quite a lot of them too. I can tell you what I found.

Logitech is very heavy on the bass and very aggressive, especially at higher volumes. They can be toned down a bit on an Audigy 2 or higher sound card, but on an SB Live! I can handle about 15 minutes worth before the hair stands up on the back of my neck. Incidentally, I have a Logitech Z680 set sitting here staring me in the face.. It shakes the place.. Quality control on them leaves a little something to be desired.

Altec Lansing is complete shit. Somebody peeing in a tin can sounds more musical than these pieces of crap. I hated mine with a passion. My former girlfriend kept cranking them and I kept telling her to turn them down before I ripped them out of the computer. I don't even call that musical. The bass was muddy, monotone, distorted trash. They were replaced by Logitech Z-2200s.

Creative Labs (Cambridge Soundworks actually) sound like my cats do when they want their ass scratched. They have the most HORRID, monotone, muddy bass I have EVER heard. The satellites are shrill and pretty much scream at you. HO-LEE-SHIT.

I haven't tried the Harmon/Kardon's yet, but they would probably be worth a listen.

Koss can't even make a decent set of headphones. I listened to a couple of sets of Koss speakers, and to be quite frank with you you could do a better job if you went to Radio Shack, bought the parts and built them yourself. Have you ever sat outside one night and listened to a cat that sounded like they had a wedgie? Well, in fact they're in heat... That's what Koss speakers sound like.

Sub-woofers

Thanks for your suggestions, however one of my main concerns is:

If I get speakers with a sub-woofer that the bass will be to much and will not be easy to listen to for extended periods of listening to (voice only) audio?

I see that some sub-woofers have a separate volume control, will that reduce the bass and still allow the speakers to have great sound?

Or should I just get 2 speakers without a sub-woofer

Take a look at those Harmon/Kardon's. I don't think you'll find them too heavy on the bass for some reason. They're easy to find if you take a look around at your big box stores.

With a woofer included on a good set with the volume control included usually on the rear of the woofer you can lower the bass there and with the sound mixer included with the software that comes along with a sound card. If you are using onboard sound you can use the advanced settings in the volume control there to lower the bass.

For gaming, video playback, and music only the Logitech 5.1 surround Z-640 model speakers are a little more then you are looking for but have done well here. http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/MY/EN,CRID=2,CONTENTID=5047

Despite what some might say Koss is far being at the bottom. http://www.koss.com/koss/kossweb.nsf/prfaprdet?openform&19C014115269CFE8862571C6005B2B24
